Summertime, summertime, sum-sum-summertime! The rhythm of our lives changes a bit once school is out, the heat is on and we settle into summer in Central Texas. Why not take the opportunity to learn something new this summer? Maybe you’ve always wanted to learn to decorate cakes. Or play the cello. Or bake bread. You’re in luck! Bell County offers a multitude of opportunities to learn, grow and have a lot of fun. Below is a list of just a few of the great places where your new adventure awaits you.
Cooking and Baking
Over the Plate Catering in Temple has you covered if you want to take a one-time event-type class such as a romantic date night or learning to cook Indian food. Join them in the kitchen for hands-on cooking classes that provide seasonal and delicious meals you can make at home. Events are bring your own beverage (BYOB) and normally last two to three hours. Temple Parks and Recreation offers a monthly Cooking Club for adults at the Wilson Recreation Center, held on the second Friday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. for $12 per session. The 2026 schedule includes themed classes such as Tortillas for Breakfast (June 12), Scoops & Crumbles (July 10), Chocolate Craze (August 14) and Around the World (September 11). Cake It Easy with Dough Mamas has fun and hands-on cake decorating class at the MLK Grounds in downtown Temple from 9 a.m.-noon July 1! In this session for ages 18+, you’ll learn the art of cake stacking, master smooth icing techniques and explore creative fondant designs. Whether you’re a beginner or just looking to brush up on your skills, leave with a beautifully decorated cake and the confidence to recreate it at home. Painting, Drawing, Pottery and Glasswork
Wilson Recreation Center hosts a progressive art class every Thursday from 1-3 p.m. This long-running, ever-popular class is designed to allow students of all levels to paint and draw or just improve their skills. Individual instruction based upon skill levels. No previous experience is necessary. Supplies needed to start: 9×12 sketch pad and number 2 pencil. The Art Dept is your spot in downtown Temple to find art classes for adults, kids, families, groups and more!
