There’s something special about summer in Texas. Maybe it’s the sound of live music drifting through the city streets, the smell of barbecue wafting through the air or the simple joy of loading up the car for a weekend adventure. Summer certainly has a way of bringing people together and this issue of Tex Appeal celebrates all the reasons Central Texas loves summer.

As communities across the nation prepare to celebrate America’s 250th birthday, local cities are planning events that honor our country’s history, patriotism and hometown spirit. In this issue, we take a look at how area communities are gearing up for this historic milestone and the unique ways Texans are keeping America’s story alive, here.

Speaking of history, few sights stir up patriotism more than soldiers and horses in the 1st Cavalry Division Horse Cavalry Detachment. Their dedication to preserving military tradition offers a fascinating glimpse into the past while reminding us of the enduring values of service and sacrifice. Read about the detachment here.

Of course, no summer issue would be complete without a little sunshine and sand. Whether you’re dreaming of a quick weekend getaway or planning the ultimate family vacation down to the Gulf Coast, you need to read Phoenix Carlisle’s story here. Phoenix shares her top destinations, along with tips designed to inspire and help you make the most of summer by the water.

Summer is the perfect time to try something new. Amy Rognlie shares ways to learn a new skill in Central Texas, here. Whether it’s painting, playing an instrument, learning to cook or finally taking those dance lessons you’ve been putting off, summer is the perfect time to start something new. Sometimes the best adventures happen when we simply give ourselves permission to begin.

Of course, summer wouldn’t be complete without baseball. Banana Ball — baseball with a twist — has been sweeping the nation. Read all about the wildly entertaining baseball phenomenon that is capturing hearts across the country. From dancing players to nonstop fan interaction, Banana Ball proves that sometimes sports are at their best when they bring joy and laughter to the crowd. If you haven’t experienced the excitement yet, read about Banana Ball here and then add it to you summer bucket list … if you can get tickets.

As always, thank you for reading Tex Appeal. We’re honored to share the stories, people and places that make Texas such an incredible place to call home. We hope this issue inspires you to laugh a little louder and savor every moment of summer.

Here’s to sunshine, small-town charm and making memories that last long after the season ends.
